Macbeth is talking to Seyton. He has just found out that Lady Macbeth committed suicide, and he is distraught yet ironically, his words make him sound indifferent, particularly when he says “She should have died hereafter. There would have been a time for such a word.” (Act Five Scene Five Lines 17-18) He means that she would have died shortly soon thereafter, anyways. Macbeth is talking about how life is pointless, and how people make such a big deal about life, but it really is just much ado about nothing. Life is represented by the candle, symbolism which can also be related back to earlier in the play, when it was told that Lady Macbeth went nowhere without a candle, because she was afraid of the dark. Here, the candle represents her life, and the dark represents the absence of life: death. I was absent the day that we studied this in groups in class, so I am unable to answer the last question.
